Animal Rights Groups
There are a few animal rights groups that are strongly against pet monkey ownership. A prominent animal rights group that has been recently in the news is NAPSA (North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance) is advocating the need to limit pet monkey ownership. They have famously sent Justin Bieber an open letter to request that he resist the urge of buying another pet monkey. Since the pop star had been interviewed in GQ magazine saying that he was thinking about getting another pet monkey.
There are a lot of concerns from animal rights groups such as NAPSA and other groups concerning pet monkey ownership and yes they do have many valid reasons.
Monkeys are animals that are not considered domesticated animals as yet and being such they really do need to be in a wild-like environment. Any space which the monkey is kept other than a very large enclosure is cruel to the animal. Monkeys are also very social animals and keeping a pet monkey usually implies that the monkey is a sole animal which can be detrimental to its mental and emotional health. Again the welfare of the animal is at stake and for that priority should be given to the monkey rather than the owners selfish perceived needs.
